We’re back with another edition of 10 with the Team! Today we’re spotlighting Harrison McCorkell, an Associate at Triangulate Knowledge. He’s delivered standout work in less than a year, so it’s only fitting we shine a light on him.
Q1. What’s one skill you’ve developed the most since joining TK?
Definitely learning how to hold a conversation with someone that is significantly smarter than I am. Luckily, the projects we work on are genuinely interesting so being able to chat with them about a topic that they have put their life's work into is super cool. The "skill" side of it is being able to understand the high-level jargon being thrown at me and respond in a way that makes me sound like I can put two and two together.
Q2. What’s something you’ve learned about expert networks since working at TK?
I learned that expert networks are more like consultants than recruitment agencies, a core part of what we do is understanding what knowledge gap the client is trying to fill and helping them solve complex problems using industry veterans rather than just going out and tapping people on the shoulder. It's the difference between finding a person and finding the right person.
Q3. What’s a common misconception about expert networks you’d love to clear up?
That an expert has to be old, senior or an academic. An expert can be quite literally anyone, as long as they have specialised knowledge about something and can speak about it clearly.
Q4. What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
If you wake up tomorrow and you're suddenly 80 years old, would you be happy with what you'd done so far? Which effectively boils down to "do the thing that you find rewarding".
Q5. How do you stay organised during a busy project week?
I promise I'm not sponsored but the "Todoist" app is an absolute lifesaver. Do I know what the benefits of it are over any other 'reminder-type' app? Absolutely not. Do I use it religiously anyway? Absolutely I do.
Q6. Who’s one person you’d invite to dinner, dead or alive?
If I had to pick just one, I think it'd have to be Augustus - the first Roman Emperor. Given the sheer amount of stories that exist about him, I'd love to know which ones are true.
Q7. What’s a fun fact about yourself that others might not know?
I'm a huge history buff. If anyone ever gets trapped in a conversation with me about Ancient Greek poetry, I apologise in advance.
Q8. What’s your favourite part of working at an expert network?
There's no doubt that it's the people I get to speak with. Part of being at an "expert" network is that I now have way too much extremely niche knowledge about some industries that I didn't even know existed, which I've accrued from a contact list of super interesting people.
Q9. What’s one achievement at TK you’re especially proud of so far?
Cutting out "obviously" from my vocabulary - if you know, you know.
Q10. What’s one part of the job that keeps you on your toes?
Timezones... when I'm speaking with people in different time zones, whether that be across the world or just in Adelaide, having to remember to schedule calls with people when it's not in the middle of the night for them is always a fun way to now learn what Central European Time is off by heart.
